The gaming world seems to have forgotten, but Square Enix released Foamstars earlier this year on PS5 and PS4. This multiplayer shooter sadly didn't set the world on fire, but the upshot is that it's now completely free-to-play.
As of 3rd October 2024, Foamstars costs nothing, and as with all free-to-play games, you don't need a PS Plus subscription to play it, meaning everyone can hop in.
To recap, then: Foamstars is a team-based shooter set against the backdrop of a never-ending glitzy foam party. Your weapons fire foam, which not only damages opponents, it builds up in the arena as a match goes on, creating dynamically-changing obstacles, cover, and danger zones.
Each character has their own weapons and special abilities, and game modes include twists on what you'd expect. As well as the competitive modes, there are single player and co-op missions to check out.
The game was met with a pretty muted critical reception (though we think it's pretty fun) but perhaps its free-to-play chapter will give it a second chance at finding an audience.
Will you be checking out Foamstars now it's free-to-play? Let us know in the comments section below.

Still no fun shooter multiplayer out there that comes even close to Knockout City 😞
Companies make their "innovative" multiplayer games free way too late — just when everyone's already forgotten about them or completely do not care. At the same time one of the most important things for those titles is player base: nobody wants to play with bots or search for a match for 10 minutes.
Meh it’s just Splatoon
Making live service game and locking it to one console brand was a bold choice for Square.
It really hasn't paid off.
If its so fun, than why it went free to play?
Never heard of her.
@Tomato_Goose Agreed mate, too little too late!!
Wasn't this already free to play? I have it in my library but certainly never paid for it. Does it have an active community does anyone know? I know it wasn't wildly successful but I don't remember hearing much about it completely tanking so hopefully it managed to find an audience.
Free-to-play won't save a game that nobody-wants-to-play.
@Ooccoo_Jr I think it was already on PS+ before
@Ooccoo_Jr It was given away on PS+ Essential when it launched, so many PS-users will have it so long as they maintain any level of PS+ subscription.
And I still have no interest in playing it lol
With so many amazing single player games coming? Hahahaha yeah, I don't flipping think so.
@Ooccoo_Jr It was free via PS Plus, pretty sure it was one of the Monthly games for February
No it's not fun because it's free to play the game was flawed becaus but it was heavily monetized from the start. Before I could start to play i already gave up because of the monetization. There was almost no content to unlock for free everything interesting was locked behind a paywall and this will probably get even worse now.
@Godot25 The problem was that there was no interesting content everything interesting was locked behind a paywall.
Will try out the single player missions just to see how it actually compares to Splatoon. If it’s first person view, I honestly don’t know, it will be a very short try out.
Has the game recieved any substantial updates since launch? Any new maps, modes or characters?
Well good for SE for not give up on the game i suppose... will it work? who knows, probably not.
...and who cares???
I think most gamers simply don’t have time for another live service multiplayer game, certainly not a mediocre one. I still play the occasional game of Rocket League, but it’s been nearly six months since I touched Helldivers 2. Far too busy with single player games!
@Ooccoo_Jr it was part of PS Plus for a few days before it was paid then now its F2P
@UltimateOtaku91 All three.
Rubbish clone of Splatoon with heavy monetisation...pass
